Dental implants are a great solution if you are missing one or a few missing teeth. They are fixed, do not move, look and act like real teeth, and can help in replacing one or all missing teeth. In most cases, the implant process has become quite straightforward with very predictable and long-term successful results.
Dental implant treatment is a team effort between you, your dentist, and your oral surgeon. Like any other treatment, there are a number of steps that are involved. Below is the typical steps of implant treatment.
1. Your dentist will discuss various treatment options for tooth replacement with you. Depending on your medical and dental status, if you are determined to be a good candidate, you will be referred for an assessment by our surgeons at Interface Centre.
2. Dental x-ray films will be needed. In most cases typical radiographs are enough, but your surgeon may need 3-dimensional (CT scan) images to better assess your case. Photographs and dental impressions may also be needed.
3. Implants are high precision titanium alloy screws that replace the root of the missing tooth. It is placed in bone, usually in matter of minutes. The implant placement surgery is generally very comfortable. Although some of our patients choose sedation for more complex treatment, a local anesthetic (freezing) is usually enough for straightforward cases (for placement of one or two implants). You will be prescribed pain relievers (if needed), mouth rinses, and possibly antibiotics. It is not uncommon for most of our patients needing only one or 2 doses of pain relievers after surgery at Interface Centre.
4. Most implants are incorporated in (fused to) your bone in 6-12 weeks. During this time, your surgeon will supervise and assess your healing. This process is quite comfortable.
5. In most cases, once the implant is fused (“osseointegrated”), you are ready for the restoration. This is done by your dentist. In majority of cases, this involves attaching the pre-fabricated precision components to allow for making a custom-made restoration made specifically for you. These steps are quite comfortable and very rarely would need local anesthesia (freezing).
Overall, the implant process is quite comfortable. There should not be any pain involved. However, if there are any concerns or questions, your oral surgeons at Interface Centre are always available, even after-hours.
